FAQ

I am a beginner, will I feel out of place? There are a wide range of abilities from complete beginner to national level players. Whatever your skill level we will have something for you. We cater for beginners and intermediates on wednesdays, and we will run an advanced squad throughout the semester.

Will there be any coaching?Yes, we have a professional coach and also 4 of our commitee members currently have coaching experience. There will be coaching for beginners from 2pm and Intermediates from 3pm on Wednesdays

Will I need a partner? No, just turn up. We try and get people to mix and get to know each other. Not only will this build strong relationships, which are essential for any team, but it will be good experience playing against alot of different people, with many styles of play.

I am a good player is it worth my time? There are a group of good players, certainly enough to form a reasonable team to play in the Irish Inter-Varsities tournament or against GB universities. You should also find it a good social base and get matches every Wednesday from 1.30pm - 4pm in term time, and also during our Match night/Advanced training squad.

Is this all going to be expensive? The clubs Membership fee is £5 and a weekly playing fee of £3 (Mondays £2) for the 3 hours on Wednesday. There is also a semester fee for £20 which enables you to get the rest of the semester free and is better value for money. In comparison, a years membership to the boat club would be £250, and coaching in a group setting would be £8-10, per hour. So 1 hours coaching and 2-3 hours match play for £3 is brilliant for students! Just what you student loan was crying out for!

Do I need alot of equipment? You will need a pair of non marking trainers (with good ankle support, and grip), the use of a tennis racket. Apart from this any shorts, trousers, T shirts and light jacket would do. However we do require that the clothing be of pastel colours and that all clothing must be suitable for the location, so i would like our members to refrain from wearing Football Jerseys and other items of clothing which may cause offense. There will be spare rackets which you can borrow to get started if you don’t have one. Tennis balls are supplied for you to play with.

Where is a good place to buy racquets? If anyone is considering getting a new racquet at an affordable price try www.tennisnuts.com. Alternatively try almost any sports shop such as David Gotto’s on the stranmillis road, or chris sanlon at the boat club

How is the Committee selected? A big problem for student clubs is to keep continuity from year to year. Therefore the Committee is selected towards the end of the previous academic year, so they are in place and can organise for new members at the Freshers’ Bazaar. This is done at the AGM (Annual General Meeting) each year.
